However, there are many challenges exist as well. The main composition of natural gas is methane, which is the lightest hydrocarbon and it is gas under normal temperature and pressure. Natural gas combustion heat is 8000 kcal to 8500kcal per cubic meter, and the explosion concentration is 5%to 15% (by volume). Natural gas is light, with high heat capacity and wide explosion concentration range, so when it leaks, it is very easy to explode and difficult to be quenched. Generally, the result of natural gas leakage is hazardous. If there is not enough attention put on natural gas safety management, accidents led by natural gas will be the main obstacle of natural gas industry.
Natural gas is same as the other flammable and explosive fluids. Its production, transportation and application use many type of pressure containers, such as giant tanks, transportation pipes, containers in factories, tube trailers, gas station vessels, and small gas bottles. These pressure instruments and natural gas are commonly used by people everywhere, even in residential regions. Although they bring convenience to our daily life, meanwhile they are also dangerous goods which threaten people’s lives.
Natural gas pipeline are underground normally. They are like blood tube of s city. There are two ways to shut down natural gas leakage automatically, air drive and electricity drive. For the air operated device, it requires high pressure inactive gas bottle to be the driver. The high pressure gas is hazmat itself, not even say it needs to be maintained and replaced routinely, which requires high level management and skilled labor force. Improper management may leads accident. This makes air drive safety device is impossible to be used at unguarded spots. Power operated safety device requires power supply. However, for the sake of safety, once there is flammable and explosive fluid leaked, the first action often been taken is shut down power supply, which highly limited power drive safety device.
